I’m half-way through a book called Piano Lessons by Anna Goldsworthy, an Australian pianist and author. The book is a memoir of her lessons with Eleanora Sivan, a Russian émigré. I’ll write a review of the book when I’m done, but for now here’s a quote by Mrs. Sivan.
Spirit of generosity is crucial for music. Some people think knowledge is theirs, to keep, and will not share, but this will kill sounds immediately… In large sense, generosity not just about acts, is way of thinking. The more you have, the more you give. In some ways, it comes together with religious beliefs, of bringing and giving. Always remember: only what you give is yours.
The spirit of sharing is alive and well in the blogging world, as well as some of the piano teachers’ forums in which I participate. Thanks to all of you who so willingly share. We’re all better for it.
Oh I am reading this too! It is the first ebook I ordered on Kobo. I remember reading this passage, I love it.
It’s very inspirational, isn’t it? Sometimes I get too technical in my teaching and this is a good reminder to keep the imagination flowing.
